may accidentally be cut during a routine hair or nail appointment, it makes
sense to use sterile instruments. Nail clippers, acrylic nail drills, cuticle
scissors, callus paring blades, reusable razors and blades all have the
potential to transmit infectious diseases if they are not properly sterilized."

HIV/AIDS IN THE UNITED STATES
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that 950,000 U.S.
people are living with HIV/AIDS. Of the estimated 16,371 AIDS-related deaths in
the US in 2002, approximately 52 percent were blacks, 28% whites, 19% Hispanics,
and less than 1% Asians and American Indians Natives
HIV/AIDS WORLDWIDE
As of the end of 2003, an estimated 37.8 million people worldwide - 35.7 million
adults and 2.1 million children younger than 15 years - were living with
HIV/AIDS. Approximately two-thirds of these people (25.0 million) live in
Sub-Saharan Africa; another 20 percent (7.4 million) live in Asia and the
Pacific.
THE MMA AFTERMATH In November 1, 2001 a law was
passed in New York State banning the use of MMA which has since been replaced with other chemicals, such as ethyl
methacrylate. However, according to John Bailey, Ph.D., acting director of
FDA's Office of Cosmetics and Colors, the replacement chemicals have never
been fully studied for safety, and they may be as harmful as methyl
methacrylate.
